Why is the grass greener?

I have a heavy heart.  The amount of divorces that I am hearing about in our community saddens me greatly.  My oldest came home from school the other day and asked why you have to get divorced after you have been married for a while.  It is so sad that, that is what is being modelled for her.  We sat down and I tried to explain that divorce is an option and it is an option that my husband and I said doesn’t exist before we got married.

Ever since this conversation I have been thinking about her question, and why so many are choosing divorce?  Why do so many think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence?greener grassThen my analytical brain got to work.   Why does the grass look greener on the other side?  Why doesn’t the grass on my side look green?  Think about it for a minute.  Just because my grass doesn’t look green does that mean that I have to leave to find greener?  Maybe I should try to make my side greener.  What can I do to have greener grass?  I chose this grass, I made promises to take care of this grass in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, till death to we part.  My grass is not dead, what can I do to make it greener.  Sometimes the grass doesn’t react the way that we want it to but out of all the grass in the world, this is the grass that I chose.

No matter what shade of green our grass is, it is our responsibility to take care of it and give it what it needs.  Don’t give up on your grass!  Set an example for the younger generation that you don’t need to get a divorce!

Marriage is an exciting journey, that at times takes a lot of work.  But all the hard work is worth the green, green grass that benefits your children and the generations to come.

  1. agree agree agree!!! We live in a society that thinks its cool to bash marriage, make fun of it, and alternately create such an unrealistic picture of it as to sabbotage the real ones! We need to be honest that marriage takes work, isn't always super romantic, but is totally worth it!!

  2. So true! When I was working and Dustin would bring me a coffee or meet me for lunch I would be made fun of by my single Mom co-workers. It was nasty, I was being teased and made fun of because I am married to the father of my children. How our world is changing.

  3. I always hold on the quote from Ruth Graham Bell when asked if she ever wanted to divorce Bill Graham - Divorce never! Murder yes. The D word is not an option for me. There are times when I'm ready to walk out the door, running and screaming, but those are the times you have to cling to God more and pray that He teaches you how to love your husband the way He wants us to.

  4. Good post and oh so true!

It is the same with parenting. We get made fun of or called stick in the muds because some things are just banned from our house. I want my kids to have a childhood and honestly society has a warped view of that. I refuse to go with the flow.
